Single Site vs Multiple Sites

There is a great debate whether it is better to build one large site, or many smaller niche sites. The claim behind making one larger site is that you can dedicate more resources to the site and make it the best that it can possibly be and thus make more money. The claim behind making smaller sites is that it allows you to diversify and allows you to find a profitable mix of web properties.
I tend to lean towards the portfolio of sites approach than the single site method. Now there are always times where this may not hold true, and one of them is in a situation where you have a revolutionary idea for a site that could drive tons of revenue into your business.
The biggest reason I like the multiple site approach is because it allows you to find sites that are the most profitable for your personal competencies. It also allows you to discover new niches that might currently be fairly un-competitive to make money in. Hopefully you can then use that to concentrate on profitable sites and have great success with your online business.
